The Suffolk County United Veterans Project, Inc. (SCUVP) was founded in 1989 to give homeless veterans a place to stand. Its residents are former members of the military, usually with problems of substance abuse, who have not been able to succeed in any alternate form of treatment. It creates a space where veterans can live safely, in sobriety, in a self-governing and self-supporting residence-based community. Just as the military specialized in making veterans combat-ready, so SCUVP works to help veterans become "society ready". Rather than duplicate the function of other agencies, it concentrates on helping veterans take advantage of available services, and on providing job training and job-getting skills. Whenever possible, SCUVP staff are veterans themselves (veterans helping veterans).

Homeless veterans sometimes refer to themselves as "MIAs - Missing in America". The Suffolk County United Veterans Project, Inc. is committed to acting on the belief that these lost veterans are a valuable resource, and we intend to find and bring home as many as possible. We owe it to them. They fought for our freedom. Now, we mean to help them free themselves.

We are an independent organization with no connection to the United States Veterans Administration. The Suffolk County United Veterans Project, Inc. is a registered 501 (c)(3) organization and all donations are tax exempt to the extent of applicable laws.
