There are several levels of housing available to veterans at The Suffolk County United Veterans Project, Inc. (SCUVP). These levels enable us to accept all veterans. A communal living arrangement is created in which veterans help other veterans who have been through similar experiences.
SHELTER: Veteran requires immediate emergency assistance, including shelter. Most homeless veterans in this category will be referred to detox and rehab. The beds available for Level One veteran/residents in the SCUVP are primarily a “holding” facility until the veteran can enter an appropriate medical care facility.
TRANSITIONAL: The veteran has very recently stopped substance abuse, but is not connected to any organized program of recovery/sobriety. Several beds are available for veterans in this category. Again, these are essentially holding facilities until the veteran enters an appropriate medical care facility, from which he will return to SCUVP to continue his recovery in the next three (3) levels.
RENTAL: Veteran has been sober and substance abuse free for at least six (6) months. He is working or furthering his or her education. Most are in aftercare programs at this level, as well as participating in other services. Each veteran shares a room with another veteran.
PERMANENT: Veteran is now living independently in a single room.
HOMEOWNERSHIP: Veteran is saving money. We are able to assist the veteran in financing appropriate housing, either for rental or actual purchase. They are now living independently and have gone from homeless to homeowner.
SENIOR HOUSING: Veteran is either a senior or disabled living independently with support services.
